THE TRUCKER (CONT.)

You might say, "What worth does a truck driver have anyway?" I can hear many thinking this. But to Mike, it is an important role in life, and, being one of the top truckers in the nation makes him feel worthy...

Truckers are the direct link to our food chain. Without them we would suffer. They are the direct link to most products which come into the country or are domestic... Without truckers, life as we know it would not exist, and, it would raise the prices of most products so high that the average citizen would not be able to afford them. Thus, being a trucker does have much status, though it is not the kind of status most would relate to...

Anyway, Mike was really shaken up by his near miss, and, he was growing more and more tired by the moment. Still, there was something going on; he was stuck here in this traffic for who knows how long. People were beginning to get out of their cars, some were on phones, while others were getting onto the roof of their cars to see what they could see. It was going to be slow moving, once it returned to normal.

Mikes rig was quite high, and, he strained to see what he could see. All he could see this far was traffic for miles and miles. He was considering climbing up on top of the cab of his truck to see if he could make out anything, but, thought he should wait, just in case the cars started to move. It is not easy to get up and down a Peterbilt, although he was used to climbing it for various reasons...

He sat there watching the people out on the E-Way; buzzing about what could be going on. Many were on cell phones to their offices, loved ones, or who knows who. He thought about calling ahead to let them know what he was up against, but, he was not all that late yet...

He heard sirens, and, saw in his mirrors that from behind in the median area of the E-Way, there were several Police cars, ambulances, and, tow trucks trying to maneuver the median, which was deeper in some areas than others. This was going to be a long, long wait...

People were getting restless, you could see that in the number outside their vehicles. Order was going to have to be restored before they could move again. Eventually there would be officials passing through and by trying to convince people to get back into their vehicles... Mike sighed and turned his music up, it helped him to relax, though he did not want to get too relaxed, as he was way too tired...

Again, his thoughts turned to Jill. Lovely and fun-loving Jill, who had taken him to the heights of human love, just to bring him down farther than he could have ever imagined... Why she kept creeping up in his thoughts lately, he did not know. All he knew is that she did, and, while he tried not to let it get to him, it took little pieces of his soul each time...

After about an hour, Mike decided that he would get on top of the rig to see what he could see. He was restless and tired and had to do something. As he climbed he could hear more sirens approaching. Lord, what had gone on ahead? People came up to the rig to find out if he could see anything, anything at all... He was looking as far as he could see, and, all he could make out was the lights of the emergency vehicles, which were miles ahead.

He climbed down and grabbed a cup of coffee, then sat on the running board of his truck. There were about 20 people around his rig right now, which was fine with him, as being tired, it occupied him and his thoughts...

More to come...
