COULD IT HAPPEN?

There was a country that was once so great that it stood alone in the world. The rest of the world worked hard, to scrimp, scrape and save, so that they could come to this great place. It was purportedly the land of milk and honey, and, everyone wanted such a life. Soon, this fine country was over-populated, it was bursting at the seams; there was not enough work to go around, there was not enough money in government funding to care for those who could care for themselves. Within a decade, this great country was faced with a billion or more people who could not contribute to the economy, as they had no resources to do so. They were falling sick, they were living in the streets; there was massive crime, poverty, and, many health issues. Those that had the means would not share, they did not feel it was their place to care for those that had fallen on their luck; if they had each contributed something, the numbers would have dropped. But, they did not, and, the numbers of the downed grew and grew and grew. Also, the country was at war; not with one country, but, with many. This further crippled the economy, and, it was not to get any better...
People began to panic, they had done so much for their country, or they had done so much to be a part of this noted place, and, now there was nothing... The results of massive poverty eventually took over; millions upon millions met their demise, either from hunger, illness, disease, suicide, or other such factors. The world as a whole sat and watched, they laughed, they celebrated the fall of the great country. And, then, they came and destroyed the remains of what had been the most notable country since ancient Rome...
Some of the original citizens were aware of what was going on in the earliest stages, and, they left the homeland to find a new life. They were sad to see what had happened to their native land, but, they were not surprised, and, they were glad to have had the insight far in advance, thus, they were alive and well, in countries once deemed as third world countries...
