IN THEORY

A man sits on a bench in the park, looking as if he had lost something. People walk by without noticing him, they are busy enjoying the afternoon in the sun. This man watches everyone that passes by, looking expectantly into their faces to see if there might be some contact, but, there is none. He continues this for hours. In the height of the afternoon, he is thinking that perhaps he has wasted his time, he is considering getting up to leave. All of a sudden, a person approaches the man, and asks him if everything is alright. The man seems dazed and confused, but, says that he is alright. The person sits and studies the man; there is something amiss in his demeanor. At this point the man decides that it is time to go, and, stands to do so. The person feels in their heart that something is wrong, and so, asks the man where he is going. This really confused the man, he could not seem to answer. And so, he sat down again, shaking his head. The other person decides that the gentleman doesn't know where is he is going, which prompts them to ask questions, hoping to assist the man's memory. Still the man shook his head. There was only one thing left to do; they must go to the nearest police station and figure out where the man belonged. Of course, this was unnerving to the gentleman, however, he couldn't for the life of him seem to remember anything today. When the other person asked him his name he searched for an answer, but, none came forth... This seemed to confuse him more, therefore, the other person insisted that they must get him to the police station. The man grudgingly agreed. Off they went, chatting about all the splendor the sights they encountered along the way. Both were friendly and amiable people; both were on a mission. As they came to the end of the park, there was a busy street to be crossed, and, the other person began to guide the man across, neglecting to look before they did so. All of a sudden, the man threw the person as far as he could, as a bus came lumbering at a rather high speed. The man was too slow to get out of the way, he had been too preoccupied saving the life of the stranger. It all happened very fast. The stranger was spared, but, was bruised from being thrown by the man, still, they needed to get to the man and see how badly he had been hurt! There was a crowd by now, wanting to know what had happened. As the person assisting the man got to the point of impact, there was no one there, and, neither was the bus that had hit him. Now the person that had assisted the gentleman was the one who was dazed and confused... Can you figure out what happened? Ok, well, I guess I will have to tell you... The person that assisted the man whom they thought was one with Alzheimer's was actually the one with Alzheimer's, and, the man who was supposedly hit by the bus, was the memory of the one who thought that they were helping... Thus, in a situation of such circumstances, the person who thought that they were helping another was in fact eradicating what was left of his memory, and, upon this action, was aware, but clueless of the event... In other words, the small amount of memory that the person had to begin with was a bigger hindrance than having none at all, therefore, the person gave up the will to their memory, without realizing that they had done so. In which case, they were spared the impact of ever finding out that they had Alzheimer's Disease....
