A DREAM WHICH HAUNTS ME TIME AND TIME AGAIN

I grew up too fast, and too wild,
Never really got to be a child...
Was no fault of mine, though,
Back then I did not know....

When you are out there all alone,
There will be lessons you should have never known...
You meet people who came straight from hell,
As they attempt to capture you with their spell....

I was rebellious in the face of bad,
I wasn't easily fooled or had,
No one was going to make me into something I did not want to be,
Though I was alone, no one was going to recreate the inner me...

And so, I found out the hard way about life in the street,
It is no safe haven, no retreat.
It is cold, hard, and, can actually challenge the soul,
If the person out there has no self control...

When a person is solo, out in the world, he is fair game,
Many will come to try to play your brain,
Each one who comes across your path,
Leaves a chill in their aftermath...

If you hold on to who you are, what you learn, will be worth its weight in gold,
For such dealings in normal life are not ever told...
You come to appreciate decency, truth, valor, respect, graciousness, kindness, and, love,
You are forced to contemplate the Heavens above...

It is tragic that children have to face such a life, as the one I just described to you,
Still, it happens every day, yes, it is true,
They are helpless in many ways out there,
As they wander about in despair...

If they are lucky, they will be able to see the light,
And, they will grow up alright,
I wish that I could take each one and give them what they deserve,
A world void of the harsh reality of the streets icy nerve...

It used to be a dream of mine, that I would buy a ranch, a place for them to live,
I would give to them all that anyone could possibly give,
I would teach them love and the wholesomeness of life as a family,
Too bad, some dreams never come to be...

I still think about this all the time, I wish that I could find a way,
To save a child from the darkness of the street life day...
I care so much for them, I feel for them from deep within,
Yes, this dream comes to haunt me, time and time again...

I am beyond words, the depth of emotional truth in your poem has touched my heart. Though it is never to late for dreams, for even in the blogosphere, a lost child may find words of guidance, comfort and hope when there is no where else to turn.
